As a mother, I need EVERYONE IN COLORADO SPRINGS TO KNOW THIS BEFORE YOU KISS YOUR BABIES GOODBYE FOR SCHOOL..Our son, Kyler was stabbed twice in the hallway of Carmel Middle School. Carmel Middle School NEVER called an ambulance or reported this to the CSPD. My husband and I drove Kyler to the ER and the ER Dr. Filed the CSPD report for us. Kyler underwent emergency trauma surgery for a punctured and collapsed lung due to the stab wound in his chest. After a VERY emotional meeting with the DA yesterday, we have learned that even though everyone agrees that is was wrong of Carmel Middle School not to call an ambulance or report the stabbing to the police, IT IS NOT ILLEGAL OR CRIMINAL. There is NO CURRENT LAW that requires schools in Colorado to call 911 in an emergency for their children attending their school. There is a law that protects children from their parents being neglectful with medical and police reports, but NOT PUBLIC SCHOOLS. The DA is also trying to offer the little boy that stabbed and tried to take Kyler's life away, only 1 year of probation with 0 jail time. His next court date is Feb. 7th. Our family is truly heartbroken with their decisions, and feel that this needs to be rectified. We as a community must change these policies for the safety of our children. We are all struggling to find out how we get a new law passed, so it will become a requirement for ANY COLORADO SCHOOL TO CALL 911 IN AN EMERGENCY. Next time, the child might not be as lucky, or have as good as Drs as Kyler had to save his life. PLEASE REMEMBER YOUR CHILDREN ARE UNPROTECTED FROM LIFE THREATENING EMERGENCIES WITH 0 LAWS PROTECTING THEM WHILE IN SCHOOL. PLEASE HELP US CHANGE THIS..
