The inspiration for this trailer undoubtedly came from an article entitled “Family Camping Trailer” in the 1954 May issue of Popular Mechanics magazine. You can view/download the original article at http://www.popupcamperhistory.com/familycampingtrailer.pdf .
I purchased this folding trailer many years ago as an impulse and with the desire to save a very unique piece of American camping history. I fully intended to restore this trailer. Unfortunately, life had other plans for me and I now realize that it is a project that will never be completed by myself.
The original plans called for a wooden bodied folding camp trailer on a steel frame. This trailer was built by a metal craftsman out of sheet metal. The only wood used was for the flooring and the sliding doors under the benches. The steel body is in very good condition structurally. It appears to have been painted originally. The inside shows a fair amount of surface rust as the weather seals have failed over the years. What wood was used is in a sad shape and needs to be replaced.
There are no seat cushions for the two benches. And mattresses for the two opposing beds are long gone. The canvas tent assembly is not available and will have to be fabricated.
The metal pole framework for the tent is in place. No canvas or upper rear door screen assembly.
It has a single Stinsonite tail light on the left hand side. This was typical practice at the time the trailer was built. I have no idea if it is currently wired.
It has a single slide out step below the rear door. It has one rear stabilizer and one is missing. It will most likely need to be fabricated or replaced with a newer style.
Tires on the trailer are 15” on 5 lug Ford rims. The tires need to be replaced. They will be fine to move the trailer to its new home as long as it is trailered and not towed.
Body dimensions:
Width [closed] 73"
Length 114"
Height 48"
Length with tongue appx 150"
Hitch ball required is either a 1 7/8" or 2" ball.
I have health issues and no longer have the strength and stamina required to tackle a project of this size.
The mind and heart are willing but the body says otherwise.
This folding trailer project deserves a chance to be brought back to life.
As I say: “It is time for this folding trailer to move on to create other adventures and memories.”
Many more details that can be covered in person while inspecting the trailer.
