I've got Ubuntu 9.10 "Karmic Koala" and Knoppix various flavors, 4.0 and 5.1.1 on DVDs (can be run directly from DVD /and/or installed to disk. Have Freespire,/slash/Linspire on CD (so far, can get the DVD burned) which is a Linux distro that was called "Lindows" until Bill Gates sued the publishers... Also available at like 4 hours notice SuSe latest (10.0 I think), RedHat Fedora 12, Puppy Linux, Vector Linux and DSL Linux in various package configurations on LiveCD (the Vector Linux is strictly an installer, worth the time if you know Linux).

The installer DVDs are $5 real Yankee money, the CDs are $2 apiece. Consultation also available about which might be the best for your system.

Puppy or Ubuntu are usually the best choices for people who have never done Linux.

I also do the installations WITHOUT WIPING OUT YOUR MS-WINDOWS installations at $10 per, if done at my lab at my pace. Drop off the puter, I fix, you pick up. House Calls cost more.

That would be a dual-boot or even up to ten different versions on top of Windows, all booting from one boot menu.

Linux is a free, CopyLeft operating system, Windows is not free in any way. Cost$ mucho dinero and you have all kinds of restrictions on what you can do with it.

Linux comes with no guarantees. If you've ever had problems with Windows, you realize quickly that Windows doesn't have guarantees either. Even though you pay for them.

The SuSe, RedHat, Ubuntu and Linspire distributions have "Enterprise" subscription services wherein the publishers actually have commercial grade support. And it works. And doesn't cost as much as ONE Tech-Support call to Microsoft does.

I don't install Windows. (Unless you have an Install Disk w/ valid Microsoft licensing, in which case I'll do the work and complain about Microsoft and their business model while I'm doing it. Quality education, that is.)
And I'll try to talk you into installing Linux as well. You have been warned.

Yes, I am an enthusiast. I use Linux to repair Windows. You couldn't possibly do it the other way round.

Dell L433c desktop just had new install of Windows ME Pro, and is ready to go! This is not superfast for running heavy graphics and games, but is excellent for day to day stuff like Ebay, CraigsList, Facebook, Banking, Job Searching, and playing music CDs. The case is slightly faded, but very clean.

Even though its a little older and basic, it still is plenty fast for those basic things. Actually, it's faster than alot of newer computers bogged down with too much stuff on them. I bought this laptop brand new at the end of 2007. Everything works perfectly EXCEPT for the internal speakers. They do not work at all. HOWEVER, I have external computer speakers that I had plugged into the headphone slot and they work fine. They will go with the laptop. All in all, this is much better anyway because the internal speakers that come with laptops sound HORRIBLE!

I have Norton 360 (total protection) installed and running on this laptop. I actually JUST renewed the subscription less than 3 months ago for the next 2 years. It cost me about $170 to do so (I can prove this also). So, this laptop is completely protected from viruses and spyware/adware for the next 2 years. I have a Microsoft wireless mouse that I will throw in also (a $50 value). I replaced the original battery about a year ago. I recently did a full system recovery on the laptop to get it ready to sell. It is now in its original purchase state (plus the Norton 360, which I reinstalled).
